I'm a geek but I'm not so geeky that I restrict my creativity to following the canon of whatever fandom I'm playing in. That's just stupid.
Some creep looked at a render I made of a female Revan (which is how I see Revan and want Revan to be) and said "that's not canon. If you don't want to follow canon, don't make Star Wars art." ARE YOU F-ING KIDDING ME?!?
So just have fun and let your creativity set you free. Also, don't get your knickers in a twist just because someone doesn't follow the rules of canon which, believe it or not, is just as "made-up" as the stuff the artist "makes-up".

Yes, it's canon that Revan was male. But honestly, doesn't it make it more scary if Revan was a sith if Revan was a woman? Like Atton said "It's bad enough when the guys go to the dark side, but a woman? Watch out!'
Tell the guy who said that to you to go space himself ^_^

I do my best to stick with canon but if there is something I really want to do that's outside of canon, I do it anyway. As you said, got to spice it up a little.

Enh, I'm on the fence for this issue. Yes, fandom should be fun, but sometimes I think it gets a bit out of control. It's one thing if you're just drawing things and having fun with it, but I've seen people change things that are in canon and use their changes in discussions and debates, which does not work. To clarify, when I say discussions, I don't mean things like "What if..." short of discussions. I mean things like "This character sucks because..." discussions.
I'm working really hard on my projects and, while I want people to have lots of fun with it, I also don't want them to totally ignore and disrespect canon. I think, as with most things, there should be some sort of balance there.
Yes, I know what you mean. I try to stick to canon as best I can because it's so universal. More people are going to understand canon events than ones I make up. On the other hand, there are reasons to go beyond canon in some instances. In the next chapter of my Star Wars story set 4,000 years before the movies, the crew goes to Naboo. According to the canon, Naboo is pretty much in the dark ages at this point. While I don't make Naboo look like it did in the movies, it is more modern and "movie-like" than what the canon states. But that is only one of the rare instances I go outside of canon for that particular story.
There should be balance or just mark the story as totally Alternate Universe. I just don't like it when people expect you to stay 100% true to the canon when the canon isn't even 100% complete.

Yeah, that's fine! Like I said, I totally get playing with concepts and characters. It's all in good fun. I don't really know much about the Star Wars fandom, so I'm not quite sure what you're referring to, but I'm sure it's okay.
I was reading over a discussion/debate involving the story The Phantom of the Opera in which someone was saying things like "They should be able to write what they want! So what if it's OOC!" Which is fine, really, although I much prefer to read fics that have the characters behaving like themselves as much as possible, but the person basically said that they can argue their point USING that OOC version of the story. No, darlings. Just no. Because if that were the case, I could make up anything just like that person did and argue my "points" and make her's invalid, you know? And just for reference, the OOCness was usually Raoul being abusive to Christine so she ran off with The Phantom and they lived happily ever after nonsense. Bleh. Sorry for rambling about that at you. I wanted to say things like that to the person talking about it, but I couldn't find her comment again in the sea of them and I really didn't want to go searching.
Anyway, yes, I agree. You don't have to be a 'slave' to canon or anything. But at the same time, I think people should still respect it.
Thank you for not getting mad or anything. I wasn't meaning to be rude with my comment. I'm on both sides of this issue, I think.
*cheers* Great stamp, and I agree!!! I've also gotten into arguments about Revan's gender before, but I tend to disregard that little part of canon completely. I mean, Lucasarts didn't necessarily need to make KotOR comics, and they didn't need to feature Revan or the Exile in them...

:/ There are a lot of people that I know who will always write something with a cannon being involved and to me sometimes its like 'hello what happened to imagination and using your OWN characters to make your OWN story?! When did originality go out of style?!'
And there's people who love to abuse the cannon for their OC's benefit which I'm not very fond of either.
